In this thriller movie The Shallows (2016), Blake Lively plays as Nancy Adams who’s a medical student traveling to a secluded Mexican beach to surf. It was also the same beach visited by her late mother and while surfing, she finds herself on the feeding ground of a great white shark. Nancy’s only stranded 200 yards from shore but must use her resourcefulness and wits to bring her back to safety.
In the movie, you can see how the Casio’s Baby-G played an important role for the main character. She uses the stopwatch function to plan a daring escape during a tense moment. Now thanks to Lively, Casio’s reliable, inexpensive and unbreakable watch is cool, hip and literally a lifesaver.
The exact model worn by Lively in the movie is the Casio Women’s BG169R-8 “Baby-G” Gray version. The watch is shock resistant as expected from the Baby-G range and is also water resistant to 200 meters making it an excellent choice for outdoor and surfing activities. The durable resin construction is slightly transparent and glossy as well.
Other standard functions include the alarm feature, stopwatch, 12 and 24-hour formats, EL backlight with afterglow and of course the all-important countdown timer. The watch face is also protected by a wire face protector for extra durability.
I expect the watch to be hugely popular after the movie is out and retails for around $79 but you can get it for around $53 at Amazon. For a watch that can save your life, that’s a pretty good deal. Check out the trailer and wrist shots below.
